Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment
by Richard A. Rettig and Adam Yarmolinsky, Editors
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report

Published in 1995 the IOM Report provided an objective
analysis of the regulatory system and the negative impact that it has
had on methadone maintenance. The result was that agencies began to
rethink their roles which has resulted in the new accreditation system.
NAMA was asked to recommend a patient representative for the Stakeholders
and it is interesting to note that this was probably the
first time that a patient was included in important policy decisions. NAMA

Evaluates the effects of federal regulations of
methadone treatment programs on the provision of services and briefly on
the development of other anti-narcotic medications, and recommends
modifications designed to encourage optimal clinical practice. Also
considers professional standards and protocols as alternatives to
federal regulation for controlling methadone programs. Book News,
Inc. Portland, Or.

Reviews

This is a key book to read if you want to get to grips with the vast
literature on the topic of opiate agonist maintenance. Its unusually
well written and scientifically authoritative and really the best thing
around on the subject at the moment

Methadone is obviously the most successful form of
treatment available today hopefully this book will shed some light on a
subject that many people do not understand that being addiction relapse
and recovery.
