The 12 Steps of NA

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a nonprofit fellowship or society of recovering drug addicts whose primary purpose is to help addicts stop using drugs. NA outlines a 12-step plan to achieve and maintain sobriety:

  1. Admit powerlessness over addiction – realizing addiction controls individuals’ lives.
  2. Believe in a power greater than oneself – openness to spirituality, faith in something beyond oneself.
  3. Make decision to turn will and life over to God’s care – letting go of control and allowing spirituality to guide and support recovery.
  4. Take moral inventory and admit wrongs – look at oneself honestly and accept shortcomings.
  5. Share those shortcomings with another person – confidential disclosure of wrongdoings to at least one other trusted person.
  6. Become ready for God to remove defects – earnest commitment to self-improvement.
  7. Ask God to remove shortcomings – seeking help to correct flaws and limitations.
  8. Make amends to people harmed by addiction – repairing damage from past mistakes, if possible without causing further harm.
  9. Continue self-inventory and admission of wrongs – maintain honest self-reflection and confession.
  10. Continue spiritual growth and service – commitment to progress spiritually and help others with addiction.
  11. Maintain connection with a power greater than oneself through methods like meditation and prayers – to find ongoing, conscious contact with the spiritual force supporting recovery.
  12. Carry the NA 12 steps message to other addicts who want to recover – offer those still struggling with addiction assistance in finding sobriety.
