What is Narcotics Anonymous?
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a non-profit fellowship or society for men and women struggling with drug addiction. It is available for free in cities across the United States. NA supports personal recovery and complete abstinence from all drugs through:
- Regular support group meetings
- Shared experiences and resources between members
- A set of principles known as the “Twelve Steps”
Founded in the 1950s, there are now over 70,000 NA meetings held in 139 countries globally.

The 12 Steps of Narcotics Anonymous
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a nonprofit fellowship or society of recovering drug addicts whose primary purpose is to help addicts stop using drugs. NA outlines a 12-step plan to achieve and maintain sobriety:
- Admit powerlessness over addiction. Realize addiction has made life unmanageable.
- Believe a Power greater than oneself can restore sanity.
- Make decision to turn will and life over to care of God as understood.
- Make searching and fearless moral inventory of self.
- Admit to God, self and another human the exact nature of wrongs.
- Become entirely ready to have God remove all defects of character.
- Humbly ask God to remove shortcomings.
- Make list of all persons harmed and become willing to make amends.
- Make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
- Continue personal inventory and promptly admit when wrong.
- Seek through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with God as understood, praying only for knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry that out.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, try to carry this message to other addicts and practice these principles in all affairs.

Attending Your First Local NA Meeting
There are two main types of NA meetings in Aurora:
- Open meetings – Anyone is welcome to attend, including non-addicts and newcomers. These meetings focus on introducing newcomers to the NA program.
- Closed meetings – Only those with a desire to stop using drugs may attend. These meetings go deeper into the 12 steps and NA traditions.
Arrive early and introduce yourself as a new local member. Share your experiences if you feel comfortable. You may receive welcome keychain tags at your first meeting to mark milestones in your recovery:
