Hi, all. I noticed that on several of our boards people mention that they aren't sure how to use the "quote" function so I thought I would put up an explanation for anyone who has tried to use it.

When you find the person's comment that you want to quote you hit the "quote" button that appears towards the bottom of that particular post.

From there your dialogue box will open with the quoted text. If you only want to quote a specific portion of their text, you just delete the that text from inside the box and leave what you want up.

Underneath that you write your own text or response.

The important thing to remember is that a little box will appear at the beginning of the quote that will look like this: (minus the spaces)

[ quote=" PERSONSNAME"]

At the end of the text you wanted quoted you will see this (minus the spaces):

[ /quote ]

These will appear automatically at the beginning and end of the full text when you hit the "quote" button - If you edit out some of their response you need to make sure that you do not delete the [ /quote ]
function or it will not appear properly on the page.

Example:

This is the quoted text

thank you. Even though i knew how on the old site and just tested out my method here in another post...it helps to have the info. I know lots of times members have asked me how and I trip over myself trying to explain it simply. I can take a simple set of facts and make them complicated like nobody else I know! ;)
Now, let me quote you here:
Quote:

That, I did not know; the part about placing the entire quote and deleting the part you didn't want to use.

Over at the WD (I know I've brought this up already today in my other post) for some reason the quote feature seems to work in a different way; for me, anyway. I finally quoted someone over there but it automatically included the entire post of that person which is not what I had intended. I never thought about deleting the parts I didn't want. I guess I figured it was that way on purpose and I'd get in trouble for taking out part of a quote.

what I do here, is I highlight the words I want, then hit CTRL + C, go into the reply field, and click on the Quote feature (between the u for 'underline' and the 'Code' feature....it then shows up as
*quote/quote, with the cursor placed in between.

I then do the CTRL +V, to paste it and voila' !
this is a bit different from how the old site worked....at the old site, you had to hit the Quote feature, paste the words, and THEN hit the Quote feature again, to 'end-quote'.

* in reality , there are brackets showing around the word quote when you do this, but when I typed it that way in my post here, it turned itself into a quote function and made it even more confusing.

I should have left well enough alone and not posted "my way".
See? I told you I couldn't explain it in an easy to follow/simple way.

The boards do actually function a little bit differenlty with the quote feature. When I created this post I actually had to copy it over and then trim a few pieces of information that I realized were different between the two boards when I tested it out.

This is just "one" way to use the quote feature - if you have another way and it works, by all means, use it! I just noticed a lot of people had mentioned that they were having issues with it so I thought I would try and lay it out for those that were interested.

Essentially it's the coding behind the board - whenever you use things like the italics, bolding of text, etc. the board has to fit in it's little coding parameters in order to work properly. Unfortunately that means if you leave one little thing out (or accidentally delete something) including adding or deleting a space it will not work as it's supposed to.

I think you can delete what you want from the quote as long as you keep the stuff in { } at the beginning and end. Let's see.

Yup, it worked!

ok my last post following your instructions did not work as I wanted. so this time here's what I did....clicked on reply first, then highlighted your words above, then ctrl + C , then put cursor in here, hit the quote function above this field.....then put cursor between the two quote thingies and hit ctrl +v .....the only way i know how to do this ..but i won't know if it worked till i hit submit.

oh and btw if you do it my way here, you have to take your cursor past the second {quote} thing to type your own words..otherwise it will put your own words in the quote. my way is complicated but at least I can stop complaining now that i see it does work (again) thank you Lilly!
